Add-ons

Your Firefox add-ons work in Vimma, and now they answer to the keyboard too. Open your password manager's vault, an add-on's options or its updates without reaching for the toolbar.

Open an add-on

  1. Press ctrl+b e (or type :addons). Every add-on you installed is listed, with its version and whether it is on.
  2. Move with j and k, or press / and type a few letters of its name.
  3. Press Enter: its popup opens with keyboard focus inside, so you can type at once. Esc closes it.

Faster still: :addon bw opens Bitwarden's popup by a few letters of its name, and Tab completes it.

Installing add-ons

As in Firefox: open the add-on's page on addons.mozilla.org and press its Add button. Vimma never installs anything by itself. You will not need Vimium or Tridactyl: hints, scrolling, find and the command line are built in, and a second set of keys would fight over the same keys.

All the keys for this page

The default bindings, as Vimma's own ctrl+b ? overlay lists them. Name is the action's name, which you use to remap it or to run it as a : command. Every key is on the keys page.

Details

Everything below is Vimma's own user guide for this topic, in full: every edge case and exception. You do not need it to get started.

Add-ons work as in Firefox. Install them from addons.mozilla.org as usual: the add-on's page, its Add button, Firefox's permission prompt. Vimma never installs anything by itself. What Vimma adds is keyboard control.

ctrl+b e (or :addons) opens the add-on picker over the page: every extension you installed, with its version, whether it is enabled, private ok when it may run in private windows, and update when an update is waiting. Firefox's own built-in and hidden add-ons are never listed, and themes and dictionaries are not either. Like the goto picker, it takes every key while open.

KeyWhat it does
j / k, /Move; filter by name (Esc back to the list).
EnterOpens the add-on's popup (a password manager's vault, uBlock Origin's panel), as clicking its toolbar button would.
oOpens its options page in a tab; an add-on without one opens its details in about:addons.
xEnables or disables it. The picker stays open.
dRemoves it, after a y/N question. Nothing is removed if the add-on changed (updated, renamed, removed) before your y.
uChecks for an update and says what it found. Vimma does not install it: Firefox does, in the background or from about:addons.
PAllows or stops it in private windows (Firefox's "Run in Private Windows").
Esc / qCloses the picker.

Popups. The popup opens where Firefox opens it: under the add-on's toolbar button, or, for an add-on in the extensions menu (the puzzle piece), in that menu. Keyboard focus goes into the popup, so you can type at once (a password manager's search field). Keys there are the popup's, except Vimma's ctrl+b chords; Esc closes it and focus returns to the page. An add-on whose button has no popup runs the button's action instead; one without a button says so.

**:addon name** opens one add-on's popup by name: a few letters are enough (:addon bw finds Bitwarden), and Tab completes the name. To put an add-on on a key:

  • bind addon_popup in config.toml ([keys] addon_popup = ["prefix+shift+e"]): it opens :addon on the command line, ready for a name;
  • or give the add-on its own shortcut: about:addons → the gear menu → Manage Extension Shortcuts, "Activate the extension". Vimma lets every chord it does not use through, so that shortcut opens the popup directly. Keys cannot carry a name in config.toml.

Add-ons that clash with Vimma.

  • Vimium, Tridactyl, Surfingkeys and other keyboard add-ons fight Vimma over the same keys and are not needed: Vimma has hints, scrolling, find and the command line built in. Disable them with x.
  • Container add-ons (Multi-Account Containers, Temporary Containers) overlap with workspaces, which are containers already. They work, but a tab they open in a container of their own belongs to no workspace: it joins the workspace you are in as a foreign tab, without that workspace's cookies and logins.
  • An extension shortcut on a Vimma key: Vimma sees the key first, so Vimma's binding wins and the add-on never gets it. Remap one side: the add-on's in about:addons → Manage Extension Shortcuts, or Vimma's in config.toml.
  • Sidebar add-ons (a sidebar_action) open in Firefox's own sidebar, through the add-on's button or the View menu, not in Vimma's side panel.

Known limits

Vimma is pre-alpha. What does not work yet, or works with a catch, is listed on the known limits page:

The guide at the top is written for this site; the details are built from Vimma's docs/guide.md and bindings.md at 1050bcc (2026-10-10).
